Pour-over coffee brewing is a simple yet delicate process for preparing a rich and balanced cup of coffee. Here are the general steps:
Required Equipment
-
Pour-over coffee brewer (e.g., Hario V60 , Chemex , Kalita Wave , or your preferred model)
-
Coffee beans (freshly ground or whole beans)
-
Filter paper
-
Kettle
-
Scale (optional but recommended)
-
Timer
-
Cup or pitcher
Brewing Steps
-
Boil the water.
Bring the water to a boil. The ideal temperature is between 90–96°C. If you don't have a thermometer, wait about 30 seconds after the water boils. -
Rinse the filter.
Place the filter in the brewer and pour hot water over it to both rinse the filter and heat the equipment. Discard the rinse water. -
Weigh and grind the coffee.
To begin, use 1–2 tablespoons of coffee per 180 ml of water. Grind the coffee to a medium-coarse grind (similar to sea salt). -
Add the coffee.
Place the ground coffee into the rinsed filter. -
Bloom (Pre-steeping)
Start the timer. Pour about twice the amount of water over the coffee grounds and wait 30 seconds. -
Begin Main Pouring
Pour the water slowly in a circular motion, spiraling from the center outwards. Control the flow by adding water intermittently. -
Maintain the water level.
Try to keep the water level as stable as possible throughout the brewing process. -
Complete the brewing process.
The total brewing time is usually 2–4 minutes. You can adjust the time depending on the grinding and pouring speed. -
Serve
Once brewing is complete, remove the brewer and enjoy your coffee.
